I want to buy a Volvo S60R and i found one i took it for a test drive and while I was on the road I noticed that the check engine light was on, the owner toldme that this is because he installed a Powerchip on it, I want to know if this is normal and if it is, is there a way to turn it off?

  1. s series Volvo's check engine lights are more sensitive than a beauty queen with a eczema... they go off at the slightest provocation. i would not doubt that the performance mod (a flash program, not an actual chip) may have set it off, but many other things will set them off as well, loose gas caps, oxygen sensors, catalytic  converters the list goes on, take it to a mech and have the codes read.

  2. I'm not sure that this is normal. Any good performance modifications should be unnoticable to the eye. If your interested in this car, you should take it to a mechanic before you purchase it. Don't go to the Volvo dealership. Go to a local place that specializes in volvos. You go to your local yellowpages website or Yahoo yellowpages and after you put in your area, just enter "volvo". It should bring up the volvo shops that aren't a dealership

  3. Find out the manufacturer of the performance chip I've read the IPD one is very high quality, but still ends up confusing the onboard computers making the check engine light come on. To turn it off you will have to have the performance chip removed, I believe there is no way to make the existing system learn to cope with the new chip.
