Volvo World Match Play Championship to return to Finca Cortesin in Spain with world class field
Volvo World Match Play Championship will be returning to the last year’s venue, the Finca Cortesin in Spain and will once again boost world class field at the knock-out format.
This will be the 47th edition of the Match Play Championship and will be the first one on the continental European Turf after the coveted Masters in April.
The field of the event will comprise of 24 top-ranked players from the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) of the likes of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and the defending champion Ian Poulter.
Guy Kinnings, Global Co-Managing Director of IMG Golf, which also happens to be one of the co-sponsors of the event, hailed the return of the star-studded event, fully backed by the top players in the world.
He said, "Last year we made some significant changes to the date, format and qualification criteria and we feel they did much to improve this great event, started by IMG’s Founder Mark McCormack in 1964".
"Many observers thought the 2011 tournament was one of the most exciting in its long history. The player’s feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and once again we look set to assemble another world class field for this year’s Championship".
Vicente Rubio, Managing Director Finca Cortesín also lauded the support of the players in terms of extending validation to the scenic Finca Cortesin.
Vicente Rubio said that the staff at the course are truly grateful for all the support and encouragement they have been receiving from the players in all this time.
The field will be divided into eight groups of three players each, who would wrestle their way up the leaderboard in the opening two rounds of the event.
Final 16 players will then qualify to the next round of the event on Saturday and will ultimately trickle down to semi finals and the final round on Sunday.
The event marks the second high profile Match Play event on either side of the Atlantic after the coveted WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona.
Two of the world renowned Match Play experts, Donald and Poulter will be hoping to bag the title, coming out of the first major event of the year, The Masters at Augusta National.
