Question:

Vomiting at finish of every running race - any suggestions?

I am a reasonably well trained runner and have this crazy issue. Regardless of the race - it can be a 5k or a half marathon - I end up getting pretty sick right as I cross the finish line. I will get queezy as I try to push it hard through the last mile into the last 400. Sometimes I'll start heaving even before the finish but I always try to finish it up. This is pretty embarassing and I'm looking for ways to get over it. It especially stinks when I can't kick through the final 400 reallly hard b/c my stomach is going. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to do with what I have eaten or my hydration level. I've heard that it might be related to blood flowing out of the stomach while running hard and then starting to come back into it as I finish? I also don't think it's lack of training related or that I'm over-exerting. I was a collegiate swimmer and rarely had the nauseua problem during swimming races (just a lot of pain usually). Would really appreciate any thoughts? Thanks

  1. TUMS

  2. Some runners do get nauseaous when they race hard, you could try taking some antacids (like Tums) before your run.  It does have to do with blood flow/redirection: which  blood flow directed away from the stomach, the stomach lining had decreased blood flow and could not handle the acid load. Taking an antacid  prior to the run helps buffer that acid and make you feel better at the end, therefore preventing you from vomiting.

Here is an interesting article about this:

  3. I would see a doctor about it..... If you already have, then I suggest you have a health issue in running. Unless you are very serious about running, I would go easy for a while.
