  1. Is the Vonage box previously used and Activated by your Aunt?

Did it work before you got it?

    Or,

New, unused, Vonage boxes (purchased at retail store) require new user - Activation - and account Registration before installaton.  Here is the Vonage  Activation/Registration link:

    Otherwise,

    --------------------------------------...

No dial tone means your ATA (analog telephone adapter) is not registering with Vonage service.

There can be various reasons for this.

What model number is the box?

Is your Vonage box an ATA only, or does it also include a NAT-Router?

If the Vonage box includes a NAT-Router, then substitute your existing NAT-Router with the Vonage box and see it it works that way.

If your Vonage box is an ATA only (no built-in router):

Most common reason is port blocking, caused by your Router Firewall, blocking essential comm ports required by you VoIP ATA (Vonage box).

You can test if port blocking is the cause by connecting the Vonage ATA to the DMZ port of the Router.  Or, use the Admin control panel for your router and turn on DMZ for the IP address used by your Vonage ATA.  Putting a device in DMZ opens ALL ports, thus eliminating port-blocking issues.

Otherwise, it becomes necessary to know how to "Port Forward" your router ports.

Vonage provides some info on this issue:

The exact procedure for port forwarding depends on your specific NAT-Router/Firewall manufacturer and model number.

  2. start by plugging it directly into the modem first, no router and then activate it!
