Question:

Voter registration: Have you ever been registered to vote? What if you don't know?

My husband has moved around a lot and doesn't know if he registered to vote ever. I called to see if he ever registered in the state we live in now and he isn't. He will be filling out a new form, so what is the appropriate response to the question "have you ever registered to vote?" Is it fine to just put "No" or will his registration be held up? He's lived in two other states where he could possibly have been registered. Is it better to put "Yes" with his last most recent address?

  1. Do you think they are going to pull his app, say "oh my god, this guy, we should check this out" and then take the time to find out he was mistaken if he was registered or not and then come put him in a firing line?  Quit sweating petty things.  Check no and register where you are.

  2. It wouldn't hurt to contact the local Board of Elections offices in the other places your husband has lived to check to see if he is registered to vote there. His registration in the other municipalities can always be canceled. You can find contact information at this website: http://www.declareyourself.com/voting_fa...

As for how he should fill out the form, if you don't contact the Board of Elections beforehand, he can always just indicate that he has registered to vote before, but this is the first time he is registering from his current address. He can register to vote using this website: http://electionimpact3.votenet.com/decla...

  3. They ask the question only so that they can prosecute you if you try to vote in more than one district.  You won't go to jail just for answering wrong.  In fact it doesn't really even matter.

If your husband answers that he -has- registered to vote before, the next question should be 'Where?'  If he can't answer that question, he should answer 'no' to the first question.

I'm glad to see he's registering to vote!  The more people who vote, the better off we are.  So thank him for me.  (I don't even care HOW he votes!)
