ok so im 18 and voted for obama in the virginia primary, and this november will obviously be the first time i vote in a general election. so anyway, i was talking to my uncle who is die hard republican and we live in a conservitive county. i was wearing my obama 08 shirt while i was talking to him and he knows the guy that works the table on election day who is also die hard republican. well my uncle, ralph, says that this guy is also against young ppl having any voting rights and ralph said that if i were to show up trying to vote at 18 he would never give me a ballot to vote and he said "who do you think the police would believe he can scrath your name off on the list of voters, and say he has record that you already voted." so my question is, is that even possible i mean by law you cant be denied the right to vote if you meet all the requirements. so if that were to actually happen and i called the police on my cell phone, could this guy my uncles friend actually get away with that? anyone who cuts me up about my political beliefs here will be reported.

  1. Ryan:

Good for you, stand up and be counted, don't let any one take your voting rights away. Just as the above stated, its a shame, your uncle tried to pull this on you. Plan your strategy, before the election.

  2. my initial inclination was to say write them off as kooks, but if they tell you this, they tell others too.

    this is called disenfranchising.

it is exactly what the Republican party was accused of in Florida in 2000, and to whatever extent it did or didn't happen, those areas were enough to flip the election one way or another.

What you allege are extremely serious charges, they cut at the heart of what it means to be American. Kinda not surprised to hear you are in a Southern area, but that is neither here nor there.

What you must do, ASAP, because you know your rights and the threats to those like you, and the consequences of such underhanded intimidation, is to report exactly what you wrote above, and my answer too, if you like, to your State Democratic Party.

They will be very supportive of you, and put you in touch with the proper agencies who will look into the charges.

    Do it now.

If there had been someone like you in Florida who acted on their experiences and concern, then the last 8 years would have been very different.

    I am not joking.

    This is extremely serious.

  3. As long as you're not obviously going to vote for a third party, it won't happen.  Both Democrats and Republicans have people at the polls watching that neither one gets out of hand.  Libertarians, of course, don't get that kind of statutory protection.

  4. Contact the Obama Campaign.  Campaigns all have poll workers to make sure there are no things like you are talking about.  They will be there to challenge the challenge.  Bring ID, and proof you live where you live.  OR get an absentee ballot and this guys is totally out of the picture.  I never stand in line.
