Voulnteering Abroad?

I am looking to volunteer abroad in any underprivileged countries in the regions of South America, Central America, or Mexico. I have gone to the peacecorps site, however since my major is Culinary Arts, I am not qualified. Plus, I am not able to commit to a 27 month volunter program. I am looking to impart my cooking knowledge to those in poor countries. I do not know where to start. Anyone who has done this before please give me any suggestions on where to go, Also, do I have to pay for voluntering abroad? If I have to pay, how do I get companies to sponsor me. Any help/ suggestions will be appreciated.

Thankyou.

  1. So many organisations do that but it depends on which country you're in. Just look up international volunteer work on a search engine and have a look at the different websites. Normally you do have to pay to do it to cover living expenses and flights but they love people who have valuable skills like teaching or some kind of medical experience. Things like that most likely guarantee a spot in the program. Good luck.

  2. There are a ton of organizations that provide volunteer opportunities that range from 2 weeks to 6 months. Most of them do charge a fee, which is how they get the revenue to support themselves. However, most of the time, with the fee comes room and board and little extras such as local excursions. Also remember that in those countries, the cost of living is far lower than it is back home. Most volunteer fees are very high for the first two weeks or so, and then get lower the longer you stay.

I would choose the program that sounds perfect for you and then go to local restaurant owners, culinary schools -- anything that has to do with cuisine -- not to mention local churches and community organizations such as the Rotary Club, and ask them to make a donation to your cause. Or maybe one of them (or more) would be willing to have a fundraiser to help send you to this program. I've listed a few options you may want to check out here:

Good luck -- it will be a truly incredible experience, and you will never regret doing it!
