  1. Normally at an orientation the volunteer coordinator will explain all the volunteer opportunities, what requirements there are (background check, immunizations, etc), dress code, that sort of thing. I've been to three volunteer orientations so far.

    1) American Red Cross: This was in a smaller city, there was only one other person attending. We basically just watched a video about what the organization does. The coordinator answered our questions and that was it. Session was maybe 30 minutes.

    2) Hospice: There was about 20 people and the session lasted almost two hours. We were told to talk to a neighbor for 15 minutes. Then we went around the room and introduced that person to the rest of the group. The coordinator told us about all the positions, requirements, times, etc. At the end we were given an application.

    3) Library: I was the only one there. She made sure she knew the times I wanted to volunteer, what I was interested in, etc. Didn't take long.

I'm not into public speaking either but that's just something you'll have to get used to. It really is a good skill to have.

Good luck and don't worry, it'll be over soon and volunteering is well worth it.
