Vuelta a Castilla y Leon loses two days of racing
Jose Luis Lopez Cerron explained that this year’s Vuelta a Castilla y Leon will be reduced from five days to three only. The main reason behind the reduced version of the race is because of a significant decrease in the budget.
Jose Lopez, who is currently present at the Tour de San Luis, Argentina, briefed that the final details of the schedule will be confirmed later.
He also mentioned that the three days of the race will mainly focus on the cities of Salamanca, Avila and Segovia.
Vuelta a Castilla y Leon became a part of the UCI Europe Tour in 2005. The race is held every year at Castile and Leon Spain.
Jesus Blanco won the first edition of the race, with Xavier Tondo winning the event in 2011.
Spanish cycling sensation, Alberto Contador, won the race for a maximum number of three occasions in 2007, 2008 and 2010.
The race is scheduled from April 11-15, and it is amongst a few successful Spanish races around the region. Regular participation of big cycling stars, like Contador, make the race more interesting.
The contest will now share the same fate as Vuelta a Murcia and the Majorca Challenge, both the races had to let go one day of racing because of the financial limitations.
Also, two European races, The Dutch Batavus Pro Race (Cat.1.1) and the Spanish stage race Circuito Montanes (2.2), were completely abandoned in 2011.
The organisers of the Pro Race stated that they were unable to gather the required funds to hold the full race.
The more famous Circuito Montanes was eliminated from professional racing after the main organiser, Julian Pelayo passed away. Julian Pelayo took over the ownership of the race back in 1986.
Lopez Cerron told Biciciclismo that the first stage of the upcoming Vuelta a Castilla y Leon will finish in Salamanca. Segovia or Avila will feature the only mountain stage of the contest.
He also explained that the final day of the stage might have a split stage, which will include a short road stage earlier in the day, followed by a time trial event in the afternoon.
Lopez also disclosed that the main reason behind his presence at the Tour de San Luis is to discuss the matter with different teams and cyclists.
