Vvt-i malfunction, will it cause a noise?

i got a 2001 celica gt and was just wondering, when the vvt-i malfunctions will it cause a rattling noise also? and plus my motor has been using alot of oil lately to, i got about 110k miles

Better get your timing chain checked before you jump timing and bend valves. If the motor needs to be removed investigate complete engine replacement. Oil use and timing chain rattle is almost always means new motor time.
