Vyacheslav Senchenko and Paul Malignaggi bout confirmed for April – Boxing news
The current WBA World Welterweight title owner Vyacheslav Senchenko is finally scheduled to take on Paul Malignaggi, the current world number 27 welterweight in a bout which will take place in the former’s home country, Ukraine.
Senchenko was initially in talks with the Moroccan pugilist Ismael El Massoudi, also known as the Desert Storm, who is currently the world’s 25th best welterweight. The deal could not be finalised due to Ismael’s non-availability after being involved in
a series of allegations and legal problems which forced Union Boxing Promotions, promoter Senchenko, to find another worthy competitor for their man.
In this context, Paul was contacted and he happily picked up the deal to go head to head with Senchenko in the squared ring. According to the details, the bidding and site finalisation of the bout between the two parties of Paul and Senchenko took place
on Thursday, in which the Union Boxing came out victorious after confirming city of Donetsk, Ukraine as the destination of the bout.
The details of the event are still to be decided, as of now the only decided factors are the bout between the above two pugilists and the possible dates in the month of April. The dates put forth are 27th, 28th or 29th. Union Boxing emphatically won the
bidding by offering an amount of $1,000,010 in front of the two-man squad of WBA representatives.
The WBA team comprised of Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, WBA’s Executive Vice President who at the end of the day finalised the bid and also included Aurelio Fiengo of Panama, Vice President of World Championships, who was given the job to oversee the whole process
in accordance with the EBA rules and regulations.
Paul’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, was not able to put a huge bid. They only offered $250,000 with the stipulation to hold the bout in any one of the mentioned three places that is New York, Milan or Palermo situated in Italy. The date offered by Paul's
side was April 21 when the whole proposal was superseded by Union Boxing offer.
Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, while speaking to the media after the completion of the bidding process, mentioned as to why this deal was confirmed by WBA with no Ismael in it.
Mendoza revealed that, "The fight will take place because the WBA interim champion Ismael El Massoudi currently has legal problems and is not available, so Senchenko chose to fight the next available challenger, which is Malignaggi."
The arena, the final date and the remaining bouts in the under card or in the preliminary card are still to be decided. Senchenko, on the other hand, will now prepare himself to undergo his fifth WBA World welterweight title defence.
