Is it just me or is the U.N. a waste of money. It seems like all they accomplish is raising my taxes to pay for their parking tickets and lavish offices in NYC.

  1. Don't forget the U.N. tax on hazmat shipping, plus a lot of others.

  2. Aloha from Down Unda!

Yeah, it does seem like a terriffic waste of efforts with some of the news, but let's face realities...we would be in much worse shape without diplomats at least appearing to make efforts for a positive dialog in many world matters.

To me it seems much more money is wasted on rocket science & space programs while entire populations are in the grips of social economic ills of wars, health & development.

[But I'm certainly no politician, diplomat or rocket scientist either!]

    Best wishes, k-den, M1

  3. The world is better off with the UN than without it.

  4. Watch the documentary then decide for yourself:

    "UN Deception"

To say that the issue goes far beyond taxes, parking tickets and lavishes offices would be a gross under-statement.

  5. the us should kick out the U.N send it to the french  let them

pay for its problem  it should be called the united shakedown

  6. Lavish offices? I've been in the UN building, as well as surrounding offices rented or owned by member countries, and most, by far, and *not* lavish. In fact, the UN building interiors are rather run down -- it's in need of a great deal of work to fix infrastructure problems.

Also, you talk as though the "UN" is one big monolithic agency -- it's not. The UN Security Council is the only entity within the UN with any significant power and that can pass binding resolutions -- and any resolution that the US doesn't like, it can veto, a power held only by a handful of other countries. The UN Secretariat has a tiny budget compared to most New York agencies - but has to try to use that budget to work globally. And then there's the various agencies within the UN -- UNICEF, UNIFEM, UNESCO , UNDP, UNIFEM, etc. -- who work largely independently.

So maybe it's time to stop listening to alarmist talk radio and start READING about how the UN network works -- it certainly is far from perfect and in great need of reform, no question. But it's something far more complicated than, say, talk radio would have you believe.

  7. They don't actually get parking tickets, and can fully ignore them even if they receive them.  Part of the whole diplomat deal.

No, you're money goes mostly to embezzlement and occasionally to watching food spoil as it waits to get into countries like Burma when they won't let it in.

The rest goes to the offices, as you said.
