  1. Yes, we can generate, but this 3 phase is the optimum.


  2. You could, but it would be at a higher frequency, effectively all the pushing a pulling of electrons would make it heat up very quickly and it would be inefficient.

    Normally the three phases are 120 degrees out of phase, so they also balance each other out. 4 and 5 phase power would be difficut to construct to still balance out. six and nine phase would be possible, but as I say inefficient.

  4. We use 3 phase power over 4/5/6 because it has all the advantages of multiphase power (can produce a rotating magnetic field, less copper so cheaper, constant prime mover power conversion, two voltages), but only uses three wires.

    Essentially, the extra phases would be wasted.

    3 phase power supplies big loads like factories, but is split into 3 1 phase supplies to supply 3 separate neighborhoods or small loads (your home).
