W4 tax withholding?

My boyfriend and I just had a baby together and I am going back to work and he is started a new job soon. Do one of us have to leave our exemtion to 0? I'm not sure how it works?

  1. The person who is NOT going to claim the baby should leave their allowance at 0 or 1.


  2. Neither of you are required to leave your exemptions at 0 on your W-4.  The number of withholding exemptions you claim is your decision, based upon your expected income.  The partner that provides most of the support for the child can claim the dependency on the next tax return.  Your situation can lead to some questions about filing status and dependency.  Questions?  Contact me at :
