In an unprecedented move, WA Diamonds edged past Victoria Vipers by a single goal, 1-0 in the crucial match of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) played in Darwin, on May 31.
The triumph raised the hopes for WA Diamonds to clinch the title of the league, as it took the number one squad of the league down. However, they will have to beat NT Pearls, which has not won a game in the league so far.
On the other side, Victoria Vipers will face OAMPS Southern Suns in the next match. If Victoria Vipers win the game, the team from Pool-A will moved into the finals on the basis of a better goal-scoring ratio.
It was a much earned win for WA Diamonds, who lost to OAMPS Southern Suns on May 30, by a single goal. Amazingly, the game-winning goal was scored in the last 30 seconds of the regular time period.
The two squads opened the match quite professionally and carried out back-to-back attacks. However, it was WA Diamonds which obtained first and only goal of the day and established their dominance onto the field. Ashleigh Nelson, the
national team’s player, demonstrated wonderful performance and had an assist to put her side ahead in the way to success. She managed to get the ball in front of the cage and unleashed a powerful shot in the 5th minute of the match, opening the
score 1-0.
It is vital to mention here that Victoria Vipers completed the round matches with holding the top position and is considered one of the most preferred teams to lift the title. They are ultimately working hard to make a comeback into
the game. Though, the players from Victoria Vipers found plenty of chances to make level the game, but they failed to do so throughout the two halves. The first half of play concluded with WA Diamonds hanging on to a single goal edge, 1-0.
In the second half of play, the attackers from Victoria Vipers cranked up their offences and carried out attacks against WA Diamonds with new zest and zeal. Georgia Nanascawen, Renee Trost, Tegan Purser and Stephanie Riordan rendered
their efforts in search of equaliser, but to no avail. In a sure goal-scoring chance, the shot from Purser went wide and a golden opportunity was missed.
In the later time, the WA Diamonds earned many short-corners, but blocked in the hands from Rachael Lynch, the custodian from Victoria Vipers. As the final whistle blew, the WA Diamonds won the game at 1-0.
