WA takes NSW down by 2-1 in U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship
Danica Mazzini and Penny Squibb scored one each, as the women’s hockey team of Western Australia (WA) powered a crucial victory over New South Wales (NSW) and moved into the last round-match of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship, which is being
played at the National Hockey Centre in Lyneham, Canberra, on July 20.
The match between WA and NSW was one of the most agile games of the event until now.
The game had an explosive beginning with action going from back-to-back at a tremendously fast velocity. The NSW seemed to have a little edge over the West Australian team with the previous record and game strategies.
With seven minutes into the match, Mardi Watts of NSW managed to dribble a couple of defenders and volleyed a powerful low-flying shot at the goal. It was a goal that put the Western team under severe pressure and they commenced more fast and furious game
in search of equaliser. However, the lead could not last for long and Western player not only tied the knots, but took the game into their favour in a short span of time.
In the 10th minute mark, Danica Mazzini of Western Australia took the ball inside the defensive circle of NSW, played a scooping shot, while sitting on her knees, and tied the results at 1-1.
After making the score levelled, WA commenced to build up pressure on NSW. In a matter of six minutes, the WA received a short-corner and this time Penny Squibb converted the chance and put her side in front in the goal-scoring race at 2-1.
In the meantime, the match between Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Victoria concluded at two-each draw. Interestingly, it was a must win game for the Victorian women to book a place among the top fours.
The first half completely belonged to Victoria which obtained a couple of goals, while holding the opponent scoreless in the thirty-five minutes. On the other side, the second round was dominated by ACT, which managed two goals and had it all even.
Michelle Tuhan scored the first goal of the match in the 13th minute, while her team-mate, Sarah Forsyth, added a field goal in the second last minute of the first half for Victoria. In the second half, Catriona Bailey-Price notched a goal in
the 52nd minute, while Juanita McDonald scored off a short-corner in the wanning seconds and concluded the game at 2-2 draw.
