WAPDA continues to shine in Quaid-e-Azam trophy
In a round 6 match of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2010-11 (Division One) at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium between the home team and the mighty WAPDA, Rana Naved won the toss for the visiting team and elected to bowl first.
Currently, WAPDA is doing pretty well in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy as they are at the top of the points table and on the other hand Rawalpindi is also emerging as a team with a lot of young talent.
In the 1st innings, Rawalpindi was bowled out for a total of a 249 runs. Left-handed middle-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adnan-Mufti-c42057 was the top scorer with 76. Apart from him there was no other significant performance from Rawalpindi in their 1st
innings. On the other hand, Rana Naved led from the front and took a 7 wicket haul for WAPDA after conceding 97 runs. Seasoned campaigner, Sarfaraz Ahmed took 2 wickets.
In reply, WAPDA did not come up with a better batting performance either, as they were bowled out for 223 and surprisingly gave Rawalpindi a 26 run-lead in the 1st innings.
Sohaib Maqsood, who scored a hundred in the previous match, once again starred for WAPDA and remained the top-scorer with 76. At one stage, WAPDA was in deep trouble with 5 wickets down and only 26 runs on the board. At that stage, Sohaib Maqsood and the
wicket-keeper Ahmed Said consolidated WAPDA’s innings. Ahmed Said scored 57 and developed a partnership of 109 runs with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sohaib-Maqsood-c90627. Sohaib and Ahmed struck 12 and 11 fours respectively.
For Rawalpindi, all the 10 wickets in the innings were taken by their opening pair Sadaf Hussain and Rizwan Akbar. Sadaf took 6 wickets with the experienced Rizwan getting the rest of the 4 wickets to fall in the 1st innings of WAPDA.
In the 2nd Innings, WAPDA made a comeback in the match by bowling out Rawalpindi for only 221 runs. This time the tall youngster Umaid Asif took a 5 wicket haul for WAPDA with Rana Naved and Sarfaraz Ahmed also chipping in with a couple of wickets
each. For Rawalpindi, the only significant scorer was Muzamil Nizam, who scored a valiant 51 batting at number 8, and saved his team from complete destruction.
The match was getting interesting with every passing moment as WAPDA needed 248 runs to win in the last innings of the match. Chasing the score, almost all of its batsmen took starts but could not kick on and score a big innings. In fact at one stage, the
match was almost out of reach of the visitors when they were 8 wickets down with still 39 more runs to win.
But at that stage the lanky Sarfaraz Ahmed used the long handle and scored an important innings of 26 runs off only 21 balls batting at number 10. He struck 3 fours and a six but he also lost his way just 4 runs short of the target but thankfully for WAPDA
the last-man http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Umaid-Asif-c2719 struck a boundary on the second ball that he faced and helped WAPDA reach home.
Hassan Adnan was the top-scorer with 43 runs and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bilal-Khilji-c1161, Riffatullah Mahmond and Sarfaraz Ahmed also played important cameos for WAPDA. This victory against the young and fighting Rawalpindi has helped WAPDA to retain the top position in the points
table.
