  1. Personal gratification.

  2. When you ask a question, it cost you five points. When you answer a question, you get two points. If you choose a 'Best Answer' to your question, you get three points back.

The more points you get, the higher the levels you reach.

To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table at 'Yahoo! Answers Scoring' summarizes the point values for different actions.

You get wonderful prizes every year, like stickers, magnets, mugs, and caps according to your level, but the points are so delicious and nutritious and non-fattening, yet so intoxicating, it's hard to resist eating them. So be sure to pick the best answer to your questions and you'll get 3 scrumptious points back.

At higher levels you can increase your activity within a 24 hour period.

    You can:

    - get better prizes,

    - ask more questions,

    - vote on more answers,

    - answer more questions,

    - give stars to more questions,

    - add more comments to questions,

    - rate more answers (thumbs up/down),

    - and at level seven, you can trade your points for a magical unicorn, or rainbow. And the magic Yahoo! Yamster brings you a wonderful surprise.

The more points you get, the higher the level you reach.

The higher the level, the more questions you can answer - the more answers you can give to questions - the more stars you can give to questions - the more ratings (thumbs up/down) you can give to answers - the more votes you can cast for answers to questions in voting - the more comments you can add to questions - in a 24 hour period.

If you have the highest total of best answers, in a given category, you get honorable mention. And you get to ride the Yahoo! float in a parade to your honor.  But while you're riding around on that float, someone else is passing you on the leader board.

When you ask a question, you lose 5 points, but if you choose a 'Best Answer', you get 3 points back.

If you let your questions go into voting and other people pick your best answer, you don't get points back.

If your question receives no answers, the question is deleted and you get your 5 points back.

If no best answer to your question is chosen by you or voters, you get your 5 points back.

If you vote for a best answer to questions that are 'In Voting', you get 1 point.

Each day you enter Yahoo! Answers, you get 1 point.

If you answer a question, you get 2 points.

If your answer is picked as 'Best Answer', you get 10 points, plus 1 point for each thumbs up (up to 50 points - for a possible total of 62 points for a 'Best Answer' - counting the initial two points for answering the question). You can only receive points for thumbs-up 'after' your answer is chosen as the 'Best Answer'. After your answer is chosen as 'Best Answer', any thumbs-up it receives is another 1 point.
