  1. Windows Movie Maker is now really old and long in the tooth (like Microsoft's operating systems!!) and no match for Vegas. If you can afford Vegas then buy it! Download the trial first to see how you get on with it though.

  2. this depends on what you want to use it for...I use AVID at work and at home I use sony vegas pro 8.0... it comes with DVD arhitect for making pro quality dvd's and if you're lucky, you may get sony sound forge to edit audio for free...

  3. Sure there is. Sony Vegas is just the first course.....Don't get me wrong, Sony Vegas is a great program; it's an easy to use, simple program that gives you pro quality tools for a decent price. However, it's not quite ready for the professional prime time. Here are the big boys:

    1) Avid Media Composer   $2,500 (student price: $295 at JourneyED)

    2) Final Cut Studio       $1,200 (student price: $700 at Apple Edu store)

    3) Adobe Premiere Pro   $700 (student price $350 at JourneyED site)

Avid has been an industry leader for almost 2 decades now, making most people think it's the best program out there. It's an excellent program, but not too much better than Final Cut or Adobe.

My opinion on it is this: they are all similar quality NLEs. They all produce high quality masters and all have similar editing tools.

Avid is the best for big studios for it's multi-cam editing functions and ability to share files with other editing workstations (Avid Unity)

Final Cut is the best for indie filmmakers cuz it's the entire production package. It comes with Final Cut Pro (for editing) Soundtrack Pro (for music composing, Motion (for 3D animation), Color (for professional color grading), Compressor (for compressing) and DVD Studio Pro (do I have to explain?). Final Cut is probably my favorite, partly because I can't seem to find a music composing software half as good as Soundtrack.

With Final Cut and Avid stealing the show, Adobe kind of loses out, but don't let that fool you. Adobe is JUST as good quality, and it has tools that rival that of Final Cut and Avid. Unless you are doing some major edits from a big budget production, you will not notice a difference between Adobe and Final Cut or Avid. Adobe is probably the least intimidating pro NLE, and it's the fastest to pickup. It's also the most leniant on minimum computer requirements (it doesn't require some super fast monster to run it).

Of course, there are other options for pro NLEs. I've heard some great things out of Thompson Grass Valley's NLE, EDIUS Pro, but I really can't say anything about it cuz I have no firsthand experience with it.

Sony Vegas Pro seems to be very popular too, but again, like other Vegas platforms, you'll find it has some weakenesses on account of it not being the most mature program.

Hope that helps a bit, and feel free to contact me if you want to chat about NLEs more (of course, if you haven't heard enough already)....

    Good luck!  :)
