Hi,

I am planning to buy a HTIB. When i look through the detailed specifications, the Speakers and sub woofers specifications have details of RMS value outs.which value should we look for while buying such systems?

The RMS value of the speakers or the total Power output...

the Sony DAV-DZ270 which i am looking for has a total rms out of 850 watts..it it good???

Does this total rms decides the soung quality n quantity???

  1. Just the fact that it's Sony pretty much means it's c**p. Sony is notorious rating their equipment with bs watts. Your "850 rms watts" is probably nothing more than 150-200 real watts. The way you tell how many real watts something has is by looking on the back where all the power requirements are. And more watts does not mean better sound. It's how efficient the system that really matters. So don't expect to get great sound quality or "850 rms watts" from a $300 HTiB.

  2. All home theater systems in a box are on the low quality side to be honest.

They put out a lot of watts, and sometimes cheat to get these numbers. Every brand does it. A better, POSSIBLE indication of sound quality is the THD number usually for HTIB the THD or Total Harmonic Distortion is 10%

That's very high. It usually takes better quality components to get that number down, and the sound ususally benefits from this, but it's not a for sure thing.

To give you an idea, usually a cheap 250 dollar receiver will have a THD of .09% give or take, much lower as the price goes up.

So while a HTIB will fill the room with loud sounds, like this 850 watt Sony, don't expect a clean, tight sound. Everything good costs money. HTIB have their place, great if on a tight budget, just don't expect the world of them.

So no the RMS watts does not decide the sound quality.

You could put together a system with fewer watts that would still fill the room and sound better if it's cleaner. Don't get too caught up in WATTS, they want you to because it sells systems, like more megapixels sell cameras.

50 watts per channel is LOUD. And remember it takes an increase of 10 times the wattage to double the sound. Double the watts from 50 to 100 is only an increase of 3db.
