Question:

WAV to MP3 conversion software..?

I'm busily trying to record my vinyl collection (about 2000 albums) to my PC so that I can 'clean-up' the noise. I already have a good software suite for this part of the 'challenge'.

I can already record to CDA format (normal audio CDs), but would like to convert the cleaned WAVs directly to MP3.

Is there any software that can perform that one simple task. Most of the software I've found will allow about 20 tracks to be converted, then requires an activation code, or a licence key. So, I'm looking for something without any limits (if that's possible).

I'm not looking to spend a ton of money, but something that can just do the conversion is all I need, either cheaply, or for free.

Any suggestions?

  6. You shouldn't be compressing your audio. A 640 gigabyte drive costs just 85$, so just rip your vinyls to FLAC (fully lossless audio codec). Audacity supports recording line in both to FLAC and Lame-encoded MP3. Lame is the best MP3encoder, and the only one that should be used for critical tasks. Also, before you embark, I hope you spend the 100$ on a real sound card like an M-Audio. They have far superior line in circuits for much lower noise levels and lower distortion levels. Also, you'll need to change your needle at least twice in the ripping process. Make sure you have a good one; it should be an aftermarket cartridgr that cost at least 40$, but preferably 60$ or more. The turntable you use should have a heavy platter and plinth to minimize the rumbling sounds of vinyl. This work should be forever, because who wants to rip all this again? I don't want your rips to sound like the various nasty ones I get from other people who didn't do things right,

Audacity features click and hiss features, as well as RIAA equalization. You don't even need a preamp (good, because cheap ones really hurt fidelity); it can add the correct amount of bass and sufficiently cut treble to approach reference based upon its filter. It has a whole stable of tools for any old 78-RPMs you might have, including circa-1900 oddities. Best of all, it's a free program.

So yes, I've suggested you invest about 300$ in your project between sound card and phono carts. I know you're probably reticent to do so, but otherwise the results may be poor to middling. No point in devoting weeks of labor to something that you can't even take pride in, right?
