WBA declares Lamont Peterson is still WBA super lightweight ‘super’ champion – Boxing News
As a reply to Amir Khan’s claim of being reinstated as the WBA super lightweight ‘super’ champion, WBA Vice President Gilberto J. Mendoza has clarified that Lamont Peterson is still the champion.
Gilberto clarified Khan’s misconception through a ‘retweet’ to ESPN saying that the WBA has not in any way reinstated Amir Khan as the ‘super’ champion and Lamont is still the one. He further said that the only way Khan can get his titles back is by winning
the rematch against Lamont, which is scheduled for May 19, at the Mandalay Bay Center in Las Vegas.
Amir Khan has once again successfully launched a media controversy against his upcoming opponent Peterson. This time Khan went a mile further to attack Lamont by saying that the WBA has reinstated him as the champion and that he will enter the rematch against
Peterson as champion. Amir’s claims soon created a buzz on the internet and in the global boxing community, since it was shocking to know that the WBA can even do such a favour.
Amir claimed he got his titles back in his tweet yesterday. His tweet read, “Great news WBA still have me as WBA Super Champion! I will be putting that title on the line on May 19th against Peterson.”
Not only this, he even said that the same on his web page. His post read:
“I’ve just been relaxing and doing other work away from the ring since my fight last December with Lamont Peterson. As you all know the rematch has been agreed but something you might not know is that I will be going into the ring as the WBA ‘Super’ Champion.
I’m really looking forward to putting my WBA ‘super’ title on the line against Peterson, who will enter the ring as the IBF world champion.”
No updates from Khan has been received regarding what made him claim reinstatement. As of now, he still stands as the former unified WBA (Super) & IBF Light Welterweight Champion. He will be stepping in the ring on May 19 to face Peterson and if he wins
only then will he be the ‘super’ champion again.
