WBA flyweight champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez defeats Richie Mepranum – Boxing News
Hernan Marquez, the current WBA flyweight champion, went head to head with Richie Mepranum on Saturday night in a title bout. Marquez defeated Richie through a ten round unanimous decision. The event was held at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Ciudad Obregon,
Sonora, Mexico. The event also had David ‘Tornado’ Sanchez winning a majority decision over Juan Carlos ‘Coy’ Vargas.
Richie Mepranum, who currently holds 25 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie and 5 knockouts in his portfolio, was actually a replacement for Rodel Mayol, which is why he did not quite look in form and well practiced. Therefore, for Hernan Marquez, who currently holds
33 wins, 2 losses and 25 knockouts in his portfolio, this was the perfect opportunity to make a mark. Even though Marquez expressed his disappointment over Mayol’s late walkout, he still did not leave any stone unturned to make sure the bout is a success.
After the bout, Marquez commented on Mayol’s walkout saying, “I was very disappointed in the out of control attitude of Mayol but it allowed me to avenge my first defeat that I had against Mepranum in 2010. I am very sorry about what Mayol did. Nobody deserves
that attitude. The WBA supervisor endorsed my weight and he [Mayol] had a responsibility to be a professional and face me, but fortunately we were able to keep our promise to the fans. I hurt my right hand in the fifth round, but we got the victory.”
It should be noted here that Rodel Mayol had disowned the fight on a short notice, due to which Mepranum became Marquez’s opponent. Juan Francisco ‘El Gallo’ Estrada was among the ones being considered for the bout as well, but finally Mepranum was decided
as the man to face Marquez’s wrath. All of this happened just hours before the bout, therefore Mepranum did not have much time to prepare to his fullest.
Since Hernan was already furious over Mayol’s act, he unleashed his anger on Mepranum, knocking him out in the second and tenth round. The final scorecards showed 95-93, 96-92 scores making Marquez the winner of the bout.
