WBA chief wants Khan-Peterson rematch
The vice president of WBA(World Boxing Association) Gilberto Jesus Mendoza is all for the rematch between British boxer Amir Khan and his American counterpart Lamont Peterson.
The official boxing body has also vowed to probe into the fresh evidence supplied by Khan which features an unconcerned man interfering with the match supervisor.
"The fact is, there is that 'mystery man in the hat' who is seen sitting ringside and is seen, as well, handling score cards. I've been told that he's seen on tape celebrating with Peterson, all happy that Peterson won," Khan's promoter, Richard Schaefer,
said
"I hope that the IBF and the WBA are both going to be ordering immediate rematches. That would be, at the very least -- and I want to say 'very least' in capital letters -- the right thing to do," said Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.
This week, Khan came up with evidence pointing out the unidentified man who was allegedly and stealthily involved in manipulating the match result.
Khan had contended right after the fight that score was manipulated before the announcement.
International Boxing Federation president, Daryl Peoples had confirmed, while talking to media that Khan’s camp has also asked the WBA(World Boxing Association) and IBF(International Boxing Federation) to overturn the referee, Joseph Cooper's decision to
deduct points.
On the other side of the story, the promoters of Peterson shrugged off the evidence and ruled out its effect, if it has any, believing that the boxer won the match to be crowned as the IBF and WBA junior welterweight champion of the world.
The DC commission that is due to make a final decision over the disputed fight result has remained silent over this development. The boxing commission will hold final decision over the fate of the match in coming months.
In case of a rematch, Peterson’s victory will be overturned, allowing Khan a second chance to retain the coveted title.
Amir Khan is the most popular boxer in Britain, having a respectable boxing record. He has participated in a total of 28 fights out of which he has won 26 times. His knock-out record is very prolific as he has 18 victories with only two losses.
