WGC-Bridgestone Invitational’s Director: conditions at the venue for the tournament
It is time that the PGA tour heads towards Akron for the WGC-Invitational. The venue for this event is the Firestone Country Club, Ohio. The event is scheduled to begin on the 2nd of August and being a four-day event, it will end on the 5th
of August.
The biggest names in the world of golf are going to gather at the course to contend for the coveted title. Some of the players have arrived a bit earlier at the venue so that they can practice and get familiar with the course.
Larry Napora is the Director of the golf course operations of the Firestone Country Club. The four superintendents in the other Firestone courses also report to him.
He was appointed as the Director of golf course operations in the year 2008 and has been looking after the courses ever since.
Before working at the Firestone CC, Napora used to work at the Treesdale Golf and Country Club. It was a 27-hole Arnold Palmer-designed course in Gibsonia.
He also worked as the superintendent at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne.
In an interview, he explained about the conditions of the course. When he was asked about the water requirement, he said, “I couldn’t tell you a number. We have one pump house that feeds the four courses. It’s been the complete opposite of last year. I know
we have used more water this year than probably each of my five years being here. We’ve had a lot of storms miss us. We call it the ‘Firestone bubble’ ”.
He also explained his job at the Firestone as the Director, he said, “I oversee the operation of all the golf courses. We have four very good superintendents. John DiMascio is superintendent of the South Course. He’s been here since 2001 and just does an
amazing job. He makes us all look great”.
He also said that his biggest concern and worry for the tournament is the weather. The weather is most likely to be not suitable for golfers and is going to create unfriendly playing conditions.
