WGC-Cadillac Championship all set to produce fireworks – PGA Tour Preview
The WGC-Cadillac Championship will commence today at the par-72, Doral golf resort in Miami, as the top contenders will battle it out on the course for top honours. This Professional Golfer’s Association Tour event has now become a much awaited one for many
players who are either making a come-back or hoping to retain their number one ranking.
Cadillac has sanctioned an amount of 8.5-million-dollars for this championship and all the golfers will be looking to finish at the top for capturing the winner’s cheque and the trophy. Ernie Els from South Africa is the defending champion who will tee off
in the morning today.
It was the world number one Martin Kaymer from Germany who was the first one to arrive in Miami for this championship. Kaymer was surprised as his father came all the way from Germany to watch him dominate on the course. The 26-year-old knows that there
are high expectations from his followers and he has to prove as to why he is the best.
Kaymer has been practicing hard since he lost to Luke Donald in the final of the Accenture Match Play two weeks ago. The youngster has already shown his ability and class while competing with the old players on the field. He also missed the Honda Classic
and now is much more confident of his swing which is in complete momentum.
England’s Lee Westwood, who slipped to the second ranking a few weeks ago, is also participating in this tournament. Westwood had a chance earlier in the Honda Classic to regain his number one spot, but was unable to finish among the top-three after the
final round. The Englishman, who has made a drastic improvement in his game, will be among the contenders who can make a mark and lead after the first round. He will once again have a chance of regaining his ranking depending on his score after the final round
on Sunday.
Donald will also be looking to repeat his performance which he showed during the Accenture Match Play championships. He is currently placed at a career best of third in the rankings and was overwhelmed with his victory over Kaymer a few weeks ago. The Englishman
was seen in exquisite touch during his practice rounds and is up for the challenge.
Americans Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have not had great starts to this year. Defending Masters Champion Mickelson has spent hours practicing his accuracy on the range, as he has not had much success after winning the major tournament last year is hoping
for a better finish in this championship before next months’ Masters. His compatriot Woods is again in the spot-light before the tournament.
Woods was eliminated in the first round of the Accenture Match Play and has been criticised by many of his fellow golfers about his game. The former world number one has been working hard on his swing with Coach Sean Foley and now is confident of making
a come-back to the arena. It has been more than 15 tournaments for him without a victory. The 35-year-old is all set to unleash his shot making ability on the field as the tournament starts. He will be teeing off with his friend Mickelson and European Tour
member Graeme McDowell.
Els won this championship last year with a margin of four strokes over his compatriot Charl Schwartzel. He will be hoping that he can mark another PGA Tour victory to his career record.
