WGC Cadillac Championship minus some big names - Golf update
This week’s WGC Cadillac Championship, scheduled to tee off on Thursday, will be missing some of the biggest names in golf. The PGA tour’s Puerto Rico Open last week, saw several top golfers lose and in turn pushing them down in the world ranking. This drop
in ranking has kept them from qualifying for the Cadillac Championship. Stewart Cink, for instance, was Open Champion two years ago, Angel Cabrera was the Masters Champion and Henrik Stenson was the winner of Player’s Championship. These three veterans will
not be featuring in this week’s event at Doral’s Blue Monster Golf Course, Miami.
Stenson lost in his first round of the WGC Accenture tour last month. He was the world number four after winning the Sawgrass but is now ranked at 70th and has not finished in the top ten since the St Andrews cup last July. “I’ve been struggling
golf-wise for the last 12 months or so and also last year I had some health issues," said the Swede. "That obviously doesn't help if you're playing sick and playing poorly, but I hope it's only one way from here on - and that's up."
Stewart Cink is currently rated as number 59 in the World Golf Rankings and his last win came at the Turnberry when he defeated Tom Watson. Cink was also the only unbeaten player on either side at the Ryder Cup last October played at Celtic Manor. Angel
Cabrera is resting at number 83 and has also been without a win for a while now. Cabrera hasn’t finished in the top ten of an event for the last ten months. The 41-year-old Argentinean will be playing at Rio Grande as his son Federico will be making his PGA
tour debut and has invited him to play.
The three ace golfers of the past, however, have no qualification problems for the Masters next month. Cabrera being a former winner is qualified for life for the tournament. England’s Oliver Wilson is also striving to get back to his past form. He has fallen
below the top 100 and has finished nine times as a runner’s up in the European tour.
The WGC Cadillac is all set to bring more sensational golf this week as the Europeans are dominating the rankings, while Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson and Ernie Els are eyeing the top slot yet again.
