WGC-Firestone Invitational: Furyk on top after the first day
One of the most awaited events of the PGA Tour is finally on its way. The venue for this auspicious event is the Firestone Country Club in Ohio, USA. The Invitational event teed off on the 2nd of August and is going to end on the 5th
of August.
It was a very exciting first day at Ohio as the players tried their level best to put up an impressive show for the spectators. Many players gave outstanding performances. After the first day, Jim Furyk was on the top.
He had a magnificent start to the first round. He carded an eagle right in the beginning, on the second hole. This was the highlight of his game. He scored two birdies on the front nine, on the fourth and eighth hole.
He had only one bogey on the front nine that was on the seventh hole. These made his score three-under par after the first nine holes.
His back nine was even better than the front nine. He started off with two consecutive birdies, which were followed by a bogey on the third hole. Towards the end, he managed to card three more consecutive birdies from the sixteenth hole.
There were no double bogeys for the day. These made his score seven-under par for the day.
After the first round, he explained how he managed the first successful day. He said, “I just did a good job of keeping the ball in front of me. I gave myself a lot of good opportunities and had good angles into pins”.
“I hit some crisp, good iron shots, hit some close where I had three or four very short birdie putts, and it was nice to see some (longer) putts go in today. I love the golf course. I hit a pretty good drive and I was in between whether to hit a two-iron
or three-wood up there on the green,” he added.
Furyk managed a good first day and had a two stroke lead over the second position holder, English professional golfer Lee Slattery. He had a score of five-under after the first day.
