  1. 18-24 months

  2. Your dog has A LOT of growing left to do! She does sound a bit small for her age height wise but it depends on the lines. Some will grow evenly, others get so gangly it looks like the head, the front end and the back end all belong to different dogs. It seems the bigger the breed the more weird growth spurts their body goes through! Don’t believe me? Take a pic of her head face on and put it away for six months-the differences in width (good or bad depending on ages) is funny to watch progress.

Newfs are NOT even close to mature until 2 years of age, often not filling out (adding bulk) for another six months to a year after that. She should stay on puppy food for another year also-those growing bones need the extra protein and nutrients from puppy formula versus adult. I also highly recommend spending more on a large breed food of a good brand that lists corn products no more than once and lists a meat product (NOT “by-product”) first in the label and multiple times throughout the ingredient list. Keep in mind when looking at the ingredients that they are listed in order of content – the most being first and so on. Bonus points if it has any MSM, glucosamine or chondroitin in it for preemptive joint support. Large breed formulas support the growing puppy without adding to much extra weight that their growing bones don’t need.

You might also talk with her breeder who can give you a more accurate idea of their individual dogs growth rates. They would know how their lines mature and can tell you what to expect. Ethical breeders don’t end their relationship with the sale of the puppy- I’m sure they would LOVE to hear how she’s doing and answer any questions you might have too.

Aren't newfs just the best? You can't ask for a better temperment IMO!

  3. Around 2 years is correct.

  4. Well thosedogs are pretty big so it may be a couple years before he stops.

  5. Well that's about the size of my golden retriever and she is full grown but i think that newfoundlands are usually bigger that goldens. She is probably just a smaller dog like there are smaller people. But she is probably about how big she is going to get since most dogs are when they are one year old. She will probably put on more weight, but not much more height

  6. Newfs tend to stop growing in relation to their frame around 18 months ish, then they have to fill out which can take anything up to 3 years. Some lines are very slow at maturing.

Have you seen any of the other litter mates to compare??

I would speak to the breeder if your concerned at all.

You will probably get your vet saying she is just right, but for many breeders and exhibitors will more than likely say she needs to gain a lot more weight.

I have a Bernese which are similar in the way they grow to Newfs, who is just over a year old. It was said by the breeder he was underweight and needed building up, the vet thought he was overweight and others in the breed say he is just right for his age.

You do still need to be careful not to get her fat, which is when she walks her belly rolls, this wont help her.

Make sure she is on a good food, i went onto the BARF diet and my boy loves it, eats mostly now and has gained a lot of weight from eating it compared to the many tried and tested complete diets on the market.

I know with Bernese they say that 5 months they should weigh 50lbs and then at 6 months 60lbs and so on, but baring in mind different lines which mature at different weights and also males and females are different in size.

  7. She sounds right on target for a newfie female at 1 year of age.  My male was 103 pounds at 10 months, but males are usually bigger.  One of my females was about 88 pounds at 14 months.  They usually finish growing around 2 years old, but their growth will slow up, so you really won't notice as much.  Also, the more you are accustomed to their size, they really don't seem as big.  When people say she is small, just remind them she is still a puppy and has a lot of growing left to do.  And do the people commenting really know what they are talking about?  Not everyone does, but they talk like they do.

  8. At 18 to 24 months of age.

  9. Bigger breeds like that sometimes don't fully mature until two years old.

  10. Most dogs in genersl grow in height usually until they're 1.5 to 2 years of age, but they fill out in girth and reach full maturity around 3 years of age
