  1. All cell membranes are made up of lipid bilayers, two layers of fatty acids with the polar end facing outward.  There are also other lipophilic compounds embedded in the lipid bilayer: cholesterol and other sterols, sialic acid, etc.  There are proteins, receptors, transporters, ion pumps and ion channels embedded (partially or completely) in the lipids.  There are also other antigens embedded in the layer.  For red blood cells, there are the antigens that make up the blood groups on the surface of the cells, in addition to what I've listed above.  The white blood cells also have Major Histocompatibility loci and immunoglobulins attached to the cell surfaces which aid in the recognition and destruction of foreign agents (viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc.)
