  1. Well I can totally relate to your situation! I am also the first person in my family to not only attend college, but to graduate and man, the pressure is on!

I did get scholarships that pertained to my major (which is something you can also google if you put in, for example, "fashion design+scholarships" see what comes up). I did this and got some scholarships for my major but I also took out student loans and got grants.

All this is available through the FAFSA web site at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. They will calculate your income and determine how much financial aid you qualify for.

Also, loans are NOT a bad thing. If you want to go to college bad enough, you will use ANY means to make it happen--even if it means having school loans to pay back and trust me, your education deserves nothing less.

I owe around $21,000 in school loans and my payments are going to be around $150 a month! Not bad, huh? There's also options to put off paying off your loans if you can't afford it at the time, and to even set your own payments at what YOU can afford!

So don't be knocking school loans just yet because take it from me, I now have my degree and I'm so happy that I took out those loans because if I didn't, I wouldn't be graduated right now and working full-time. Trust me, my parents are poor and couldn't contribute to even my books, let alone tuition, but you know what? I made it happen and they couldn't be more proud--even if I had to take out loans.

Now the other option is talking to the advisors at FIDM. They are very knowledgable in helping students find financial assistance. There's even a financial aid office that will help you fill out the FAFSA application! They will help you find scholarships, grants and loans so I would start by calling the school and making an appointment with an advisor AND the financial aid office.

    FIDM's web site is: www.fidm.edu

Hope this helps and good luck at FIDM!

  2. try fafsa

  3. Apply here as soon as possible.

Make sure to give them all the documents they ask for.

I had financial aid before, feel free to email me if you have questions.

    Good Luck!

  4. Definetly apply for FASA- that federal government aid. There are books at the local library that list all the grants (money for school that DOESNT have to be paid back). fastweb.com is a good scholarship/grant website it matches your accomplishments and notifies you of scholarships you are eligibly for. Check the school's financial aid homepage- they might have links and alumni backed scholarships that you can apply for.  Good luck!!

  5. Look for scholarships. The admissions and financial aid offices of your institution should be able to point you in the direction of some money, be it a loan or scholarship.

Also, being the first in your family to go to college will open MANY doors in terms of getting scholarships for you- look out for ones that reward you for that.

Another suggestion would be to sign up for Fastweb.com, a website that can point you in the direction of scholarships and grants that independent companies offer, and how to apply for them. When going to college, I applied for many on there, and even got one!

Best of luck to you, and use all your resources to see what you can do! :)
