  1. Wow, it sure is nice to know that a full time student's response to his/her civic duty to his country is to immediately try and get out of it...Lame

That's not intended to be sarcasm.

  2. I was called to jury duty last January.  It was a civic trial.  Three hundred people got notices for jury duty and showed up that day.  They chose fifty people out of the three hundred by handing out numbers and then drawing them out of a basket.  Then they chose twelve people at a time from the fifty.  The attorneys on both sides questioned us, and we were either chosen for the jury or excused based on our answers to their questions.  Some of the questions were "Do you know either party in this case, have you ever been arrested, would you have any problem making a decision based on_____________, where do you attend church, do you have any problem that would keep you from performing jury duty, etc."

In the end they chose 12 people and 2 alternates from the fifty.  Your chances of actually getting picked are slim.  I did get picked, and the trial lasted four days.  It was actually very interesting.

I do remember that the clerk asked at the beginning if anyone had a medical excuse or any other reason that they could not serve.  You can try telling them you're a student--I don't remember anyone saying that when I went in January though.  Oh, and the people who just didn't bother to show up--they sent the sheriff after them right then, so you have to go.  Good luck.

  3. I got a summons for Federal Court.  Then the day before I was suppose to go,  I got a letter saying it had been postponed for 2 weeks and they sent a phone number to call the day before I go.  I guess there are just not enough jury trials for a jury pool.

  4. Anybody can get out of it if they really want.
