I was told that I need a tune up and it would cost $94.99+ $49.94 for spark plug wire set. What does a tune up consist of?

  1. Listen to the catman...he knows what he's talking about.

  2. A basic el cheapo service consists only of:

    >Clean or replace spark plugs

    >Clean or replace air filter

    >change oil filter

    >change oil

    >inspect and adjust/replace points if applicable

    >check and adjust ignition timing if applicable

Seriously it is a lot cheaper to do the service your self. It's around half the cost of what you are charged by a mechanic.

$125 seems a little steep for a $5 fuel filter and a $4 bottle of fuel system cleaner. Or are they taking out the tank and lines?

  3. It's usuallly New spark plugs, spark plug wires, distibuter cap and rotor if you have one though.

  4. When you're talking about a package deal like that, it's whatever they decide it is. Read the fine print, or ask them. And then have them write it down and sign it. If you have a Distributor-less ignition system, it's not going to include a Distributor Cap and Rotor, even if that's part of the package. Most cars for like 20 years now, it's not even possible to set the timing. They will probably check the Air Filter, and if you need one, that's extra. I doubt it's going to include an O2 sensor like someone else said, whether you need one or not. And I doubt it includes an Oil change. And there's no guarantee that a tune-up will be all you need. It's basically a sales gimmick to get you to pay them to find out what's wrong with your car, because people don't think they should have to pay for the work involved in finding out what's wrong with their cars. Why do you think this place is so busy?

I see from your additional comments that it doesn't include a fuel filter like someone suggested. It sounds like they plan on putting in new spark plugs and run it on an engine analyzer and that's about it.

  5. depends on where you go really but they always do the spark plugs

  6. it,s not so much the parts that will cost you, but the labor what will eat you up. if you know anything about cars, alot of the stuff you can do yourself.

  7. Tuneups usually consist of replacing distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, fuel filters, air filters, PCV valve/filter, O2 sensor, checking ignition wires, and setting timing

  8. a tune up at a dealership is a set of plugs dont worry about the fuel system service usually if gas cant clean it it ain't dirty if your over sixty thousand miles go for the filter sooner if you fuel up at Habib's discount fuel

These sound like the going prices
