I observed this conjunction and it was a neat thing to see. The planets in reality were very far apart from each other, and thus their apparent proximity to each other is just a line of sight effect. Both planets merely were in the same direction with respect to Earth, and nothing more. So the short answer to your question is nothing happened to either planet, and now they are moving apart from each other in the sky.

That was only an alignment as seen from our perspective here on the earth.  The two planets never really got closer to each other.  If you were standing on another planet or in another place in our galaxy other than on the earth, you would see that they are not close at all.

Hey look it was just a transit.Both the planets were just alligned in a collinear manner.This also happens in case of other planets.In 2012 all the planets are going to allign themselves in a straight line.The planets wont crash.
