  1. A gale is simply strong winds (35 - 55 mph),  Not as strong as storm force winds.  A gale can spring up at any time.  The term gale is commonly used to describe any of the relatively strong winds that are common in the UK.  Some can be stronger than others.  It is quite common for trees to be blown down, slates/tiles to be blown off roofs etc.

  2. In English, a gale is a strong wind at sea, yet not a storm. It was not until the British admiral Beaufort introduced his wind force scale that it was defined as an actual wind strength.

Nautical terms are often common in different European languages since seafaring is international. But a gale is called kuling in Norwegian, coup de vent in French and temporal in Spanish. Four entirely different words for the same thing.

  3. A gale is a very strong wind

  4. a mean old ***** that blows the h**l out of you!!!i mean a strong storm that pops up out of nowhere when you are out on the water
