  1. For what purpose?  I have a flyer from a company selling a Federal and California (my state) course that would qualify the student for a license to practice for $200 plus shipping.  Unless you are in California, Oregon or Maryland, you do not have be competent to prepare returns for pay but it would be nice if you were. You could take a similar course from H&R Block and if they liked you, might offer you a job.

  2. IF and only IF they have a great instructor in your part of the country the H & R Block course can not be beat anywhere.

Not affiliated and in fact I hate them but they can not be beat in the education sector if you get a good instructor.

  3. The IRS offers training, but only if you are an employee.

Many community colleges offer tax classes, but one semester is generally not enough...and some courses focus on theory, not tax preparation.

HRB classes are fairly good--but it's far too much info in too short a time period.  An HRB class may spend 3-6 hours on a topic that the IRS spends 4 weeks training their own people on.

You must be willing and able to read and comprehend IRS publications on your own.  A course can get you started, but within a year, the rules will change on you.

  4. Best is anyone's opinion.  Just call up the IRS or go the website and get a free copy of The Publication 17.  It is about 500 pages and tells you many things about the Federal Income Tax.
