  1. fresh it would die if you put it in salt or tap fresh from a lake or put a bottle of water in it

  2. umm normal water from a sink:P

  3. Tap water is fine, just be sure to use a product that removes the chlorine AND chloramines from the water. Use it by the instructions on the bottle. It will normally run $2-$5 in pet stores.

  4. Hi Carla.

Goldfish like quite hard water with a high pH (ie, slightly alkaline).

Most tap water will be fine for this unless you have very high levels of nitrates.  In that case use 1/2 tap and 1/2 reverse osmosis filtered water ("RO").  If your local tap water is very soft, put a few crushed shells in the tank.  This will help keep the water chemistry a little more stable by dissolving carbonates in the water which "buffers" the pH.

Your test kit will be able to tell you what your local water is like, or if you take a sample to your Local Fish Shop they will help you if you are nice.  Repay this help with your business later, though.

Ensure you add dechlorinator to the tap water water before adding to your aquarium or your fishy friend is sushi for sure.

If this is the first time you have owned a fish, look up "fishless cycling" in google.  This tells you how to prepare your goldfish's home before buying him (it takes a few weeks, so be patient!) - which will be a lot less traumatic for both of you.
