  1. No, they are not the same.  Red lights are clear bulbs painted red, and red basking bulbs for reptiles are constructed of red glass.  The shape is different, to disperse heat in a different way.

  2. Those red bulbs that the pet stores sell for "night time", they are as worthless as nothing. You will be lucky if you get a week out of them.

You can use a normal house bulb for heat source during the day for reptiles, wattage of course will matter on the enclosure size.

For heat w/ no light, I would recommend a CHE (ceramic heat emitters), they come in many different wattages, so again depending on enclosure size will depend on wattage, they can last years and are worth the money.

The coil compact type are known to cause blindness for reptiles. Some compact and/or bulb kind may say UVB, but don't produce enough UVB for the reptile.

If you are wanting a UVB I would recommend using the long tubes:

US: ReptiSun 10.0 distance 8-10 inches from your igs body

Repti Glo 8.0 distance 6-8 inches from your igs body

ReptiSun 5.0 distance 6-8 inches from your igs body

UK: Arkadia distance 6-8 inches from your igs body

MegaRay are bulbs, but are safe and give off the UVB that you're reptile needs.

    For the bad bulbs:

  3. As long as they are for heat, then yes.

(PS no reason to really need all caps)

It depends on what type of reptile.

Different kinds and species need different heat/humidity requirements.

  4. As long as it give off heat it should be fine. What kind of reptile? Most lizards need UVB lights. I don't think any snake needs UVB but most lizards and turtles do.
