  1. Feeding methods for growing puppies should be individualized for the puppy and owner. General recommendations are that puppies between weaning and 6 mo of age should be fed 3 times a day; puppies 6-12 mo old should be fed twice daily. Large- and giant-breed puppies should be fed complete and balanced growth diets that have been tested in feeding trials and that contain calcium, fat, and protein at levels closer to the minimums stated by AAFCO. Small-breed puppies may have to be fed more than 3 times a day using a tested diet that contains calcium, fat, and protein at levels greater than the minimums stated by AAFCO.

Only limited data have been published with respect to breed growth curves. Nonetheless, a slow growth rate is preferable to a fast growth rate. Weight gains should be closely monitored (weekly), and feeding recommendations adjusted such that the puppy gains a small amount of weight each week. When growing large-breed puppies were fed 50-70% of their littermate’s ad lib intake, adult height, length, and bone or muscle mass were not stunted; only total body fat was affected. It is difficult to stunt the growth of a puppy being fed a complete and balanced growth diet that has passed an approved AAFCO feeding trial using meal feeding of an appropriate amount for 2-3 times/day.

In short i do belive that there are dog foods formulated for puppies and thats what you should feed your puppy, providing they are already weaning age.

  2. Dogs are actually Omnivorous.they need alot less meat protein then cats, ferrets or snakes & feeding a high animal protein diet to a dog will take a toll on the dog's health.a dog is designed to to digest a wide range of plant and animal products.Dog's must eat more then muscle meat.they need plenty of carboyhdrates &fibre from vegetable matter and only a very small amount of fat.there protein can come from both plant and animal products.the other things to consider are sources of mineral such as calcium, phosphorous and of cause vitamins.

Dogs are they Carnivores? Are they really like wolves, hyenas, jackals? or Are they more like us? Is it foolish to feed them only meat? Should they be fed what there human family eats? The Truth encompasses a little of each.

In the wild, other hunting animal that seem similar to dogs, such as Wolves, hyenas eat fruit, leaves, grasses, dig for roots and even obtain vegetable matter from the stomach of their prey."

Cooked grains are nearly 100% digestible for dogs. There really isn't a

lot of question about this based on the results of feeding studies. I am not

sure why people come to the conclusion that grains are not good for

    dogs.

Feed a good quality formulated for puppies.the brand is Up to you that you choose.

  3. Something high quality without grains or fillers. High quality meat but not too high a percentage of protein for a puppy. Large breed puppy is just a marketing ploy in most cases its not suited for puppies any more then big dogs. Stay away from most of the big commercial names like Iams, Eukanuba, Science diet or alpo. They are filled with bottom of the barrel junk, grains, corn and other filler that dogs don't need nor do well on in their diets. Oftentimes vets don't know any better what you should be feeding your dog and most of the things they will reccomend is just what they are paid to advertise.

Innova, Solid Gold, Timberwolf are just a few of the many high quality foods.

  4. U can ty pedigree even i too have given her the same but dont give them so much coz each and every puppy cant digest it. so give pedigree with the rice and milk. Pedigree for puppies is different and for grown ups is different so buy a puppy one. BOW BOW

  5. the best food for puppies are

    pedegree,royal canine,chew stick,cerelacs

these are the best food for the puppies to make it healthy.

  6. I personally prefer a natural raw diet for my adults, and my pups.

My dogs have never looked better. Bindi's teeth were pretty nasty looking when she was on kibble, they are nice and pearly white again with the raw. She's 2 years old.

My pups don't have the 'pot bellies" associated with pups, there coats are shiny and very soft.  They're bundles of energy and look great.

Here's some information to get you started.

I feed my dogs prey model raw. My dogs currently include a 2 year old belgian malinois, a labrador, and 5 14  week old pups.

This diet cosists of feeding rmb's, offal, organs etc. While its not as simple as throwing a chicken in a bowl everyday, its not that complicated once you get started.

My pups have been getting a raw diet since they were 6 weeks old. They love it. Some breeders wean their pups right onto a raw diet.

They get, game hens, chicken breast, chicken thighs, drumsticks, beef and chicken liver, beef heart, beef skirts, catfish, ground turkey, pork ribs, pork roast, beef cheeck, I buy what's on sale, and in bulk when I can.

I feed them 2% of their expected adult weight daily, so each pup gets about 1.5lbs of food divided into 3 daily meals.

There's a bit more to than what I described it here, but all in all, its pretty simple, and is only as expensive as you make it.

Yahoo has some rawfeeding groups, there's also a group called "rawdogs" on Livejournal, this thread on Dogster http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_D... has lots of information about raw feeding. All 3 places are glad to help new raw feeders get started.

Let's also dispel some myths about rawfeeding with this link http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html

Some books on the topic include

Raw Meaty Bones by Tom Lonsdale, and Australian vet.

Works Wonders also by Tom Lonsdale

The BARF Diet by Dr. Ian Billinghurst

Food Pets Die For by Ann Martin (the feeding info isn't great, but the look at the pet food industry is)

Also keep in mind that vets are a good source for medical information, a poor choice for nutrition information. In the many years it takes to become a vet they receive little if any nutrition information. What they are offered is elective and taught by major pet food companies such as Hill's the makers of Science Diet. (an icky overpriced food)

And for anyone who says the pet food companies have done extensive research on nutrtion for our pets. Sure they have. But what they concentrated on was how to feed the animals c**p ingredients at the lowest cost without them tipping over right away. If they'd the pets best interest mind the foods wouldn't loaded with things such as corn and soy, which our carnivore pets can't digest. Good nutrition studies eh?

  7. you should go to yor local vet and look at there range of dog food i like to use eukanuba. if you dont want a vet brand tri supercoat or excellence wet dog food, but i would personally go for the vet brand. also most vet brand food has a guarantee if your dog doesnt like it you can take it back and they will give your moeny back

  8. Anything you can buy at the grocery store is made from garbage ingredients. It's like feeding a child McDonalds every day. A good food will not contain any wheat, corn, soy, or "by-products".  Go to a pet store to buy your food, read the labels, and if it sounds like you could eat it, then it's good for your dog. The more you learn, the better you can make a choice for your pup. Here are some sites to get you started:

    www.4pawsu.com/dogfood.htm, www.dogfoodproject.com, www.peteducation.com

  9. You have quite a few choices.

Rules for choosing a good dog food:

    Avoid anything with the following

    Corn

    Soy

    Wheat

    By-products

    Colors

    Menadione

    Chemical preservatives such as ethoxyquin

    Euthanasia drugs(website in sources)

A specified meat should be the first ingredient. Meat ratio should always be higher than grain/veggie content.

Organic does not always mean good quality.

Good quality dog foods typically cost more than the lower quality dog foods, but that is not a way to determine if a dog food is high quality. Only the ingredients can tell you what quality a dog food is.

    Azmira

    Racheal rays dog food

Anything found in a grocery store or recommended by your vet.

Vets sell foods for kickbacks. It isnt a matter of nutrition, it is for financial benefits.

A raw diet is another option:

Dogs are supposed to have meat, bones, and organs, preferably fresh, wholesome, and unprocessed. This is why many feed a homemade raw diet.

    ww.rawfed.com/myths

    www.rawmeatybones.com

    www.rawlearning.com

    www.shirley-wellness-cafe.com/samplera...

A raw diet is typically cheaper than kibble worth buying.

For a dog fed raw, it is typically 2 to 3 percent of the dogs ideal body weight. If the dog is a pup(under 18 months for most dogs) it can be around 10% of the dogs current body weight. Most raw feeders start at one percentage and adjust it as needed.

  10. hi,

A puppy eats a lot of food. From birth up to six months of age, he'll need to eat two to four times as much as an adult dog to support all that growth. A good rule of thumb (paw?) is that after his first week of life, when his weight doubles from what it was at birth, a puppy should gain one to two grams per pound of anticipated adult weight each day. This means that if your German Shepherd puppy weighs 75 pounds as an adult, he should gain three to five ounces per day as a puppy.

    here are some guidelines:

    hope this helps.

  11. A good puppy food...Science Diet or Iams ( can find that at the grocery store) Use puppy food, then later I went  to lamb and rice.  It is easier on their tummy's, some times I will mix in some frozen peas and carrots.  Golden's Run and play as long as you let them.  A good food is imperative.
