Hi I am 35 weeks pregnant and I am going to the hospital for my delivery, I am wondering what are the essential things should I have in my bag like diaper, breast pad etc.

  1. Saline nasal spray, trust me on this. All that breathing in and blowing out dries out your sinuses. Something to pull your hair back, chap-stick. Go home clothes, slippers, socks. The hospital will provide for your needs while you are there.

  2. You, your husband/partner, and baby should each have your own bag.  Not two bags or more, ONE bag per person.  That makes it easy to grab everything when the time comes.

In dad/partner's bag:  three changes of clothes, toiletries, list of numbers to call after the birth, cell phone charger, quiet non-smelly snacks that can be eaten in the hallways while mom's in labor (most hospitals won't allow her to eat during labor and she'll appreciate you not eating in front of her), camera.

In mom's bag:  two-three changes of pj's that open in the front, toiletries, hair dryer (some hospitals don't supply them), ipod player/small boombox, saline nasal spray, chapstick, phone charger, one going home outfit (maternity outfit - you won't have shrunk to your pre-pregnancy size yet), robe and slippers.

In baby's bag:  three outfits (you don't need more than that!) to choose from for going home, including one gender-neutral outfit (just in case!), 5 newborn diapers, small package of wipes, 2 undershirts, 3 pairs of socks, pacifier (if you're going that route), small lovey toy, two hats.

Additional tips - put the carseat in the car TODAY.  As in, now.  It'll be one less thing to worry about when you're in labor.  Do not overpack; chances are you'll be in a labor/delivery room and then moved to a postpartum room, so you'll have to schlep your stuff around, and the less unnecessary stuff, the better.  If you have dogs, take an additional hat to the hospital and let the baby wear it for a while, then have your partner take it home for the dogs to sniff, so when baby comes home, s/he won't be a brand new set of smells for your furry children.   And lastly, mom and dad/partner should each bring their own pillow in a brightly colored pillowcase.

  3. going home outfit for you and the baby, car seat, toothbrush toothpaste hair bands you dont need diapers they provide that. a robe for walking the hall ways slippers or socks

  4. Baby: nappies, wipes, blankets, vests, socks, beanie, bodysuits, something cute to go home in, bottles if you're planning on formula feeding.

You: breast pads, maternity pads, OLD underwear, feeding bras, comfortable clothes & PJs, socks, magazine/book, toiletries. (aim for clothes for 2 - 3 days, but allow extra undies & shorts in case of leaks :/ ) Money for TV if your hospital makes you pay for that & you want it.

For the labour/birth: comfortable clothes for birth (I got a nice roomy men's button up shirt) water, snacks for hubby (he'll appreciate it if ur there awhile!) CAMERA, your phone, or change for payphone.

  5. Outfits for your baby if you are doing hospital pictures.

Breast pads, Toothbrush and toothpaste, lotion, I brought a noise machine to drown out the sounds of the hospital when i slept.Pants that you dont care if they get ruined. ( it sounds disgusting but my first baby I feel asleep the first night and bled through my pants.)

Shirts, slippers to walk around the hospital, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, video camera, camera,  that's some of the things I brought sorry if if was too much information

  6. I would recommend going from past experience:

*BIG Pants - as many pairs as you can get your hands on

*Night dress x 3- Not to long, but not to short

*P.J's - Dark as you do run the risk of leaking

*Towel x 2/3 - For you after you shower

    *Shampoo/Conditioner

    *Toothbrush/Paste

    *Bodywash

    *Deodrant

*Clothes - Baggy as possible for leaving the hospital

*Bottle - If you have a natural birth you run the risk of being scratched or stitches - which when you pass water it will sting like h**l so they recomment you pour water to dilute your wee.

*Sanitry towels - Thickest you can buy

    *Breast Pads

    *Maternity Bra

*Baby outfits x 2/3 - one for the night if you stay in and second for photo's and taking home outfit

    *Scratch mittens

*Socks - for you and baby

*All in one suit - taking home

*Blanket - They are supplied but you may prefer your own

    *Slippers

    *Hair brush/Bobbles

    *Nappies

    *Pregnancy documents

*Cotton Balls - they hospital don't recommend you uses wipes on a new born baby and tell you to use water and cotton balls/wool

*Change for payphone and money for T.V

    *Camera - digital/video

    *Vests

    *Baby Hat

*If you are not breast feeding then bring a bottle, but to be honest I don't believe you will need one, as milk is already made up in glass bottles which the hospital supply, until you are ready to leave for home.

Also have a snack bag ready for after you have had your baby - (leave it in the car) with juice and snacks in there.  I had sickness to the very end and once I had my little boy I was starving but because it was late they wouldn't provide me any food to snack on...  You may not want it after, but I did...lol..

Sorry if i have forgotten anything!!!x
