  1. Yes, the size of the pond does in fact govern the size of the fish. If you have 10 -15 in an 8 foot round by 3 foot deep pond there's too many. In order to get Giant Koi, you would need a an 20 by 60 foot swimming pool filled to 6 feet at least. Hershey Park in Pa has some of the biggest Koi I've ever seen and they are in a 1/2 acre pond that's about 10 feet deep. Here's a link:http://www.koiandponds.com/

    Hope this helps.

  2. a pond about 12ft x 8ft and 4ft deep will be fine for koi as long as you have sufficient pumps/filter. if you want big ones feed them a food with very high protein content. and give them plenty of oxygen using pumps/  air stones. in the right conditions they can grow to 1-2kilos in a year or two. wheatgerm is easily digested but it should be used in cooler months for this reason. ( its harder to digest anything else in cold water. in summer feed your koi almost anything you would eat, mine love cereals, prawns, shrimp, even chocolate!. all of these foods should only be an occasional treat, so you dont pollute your water but experiment with them, its good for them to have variety in their diet just dont use anything that will break up or dissolve in the water too easily. a couple of years good feeding and good conditions will easily produce koi about 2 kilos.  spend lots of time with them and try to encourage them to eat from your hand. ( this normally entails putting your hand in the water with food in and sitting still day after day)  but if you can get 1 to feed from your hand the rest soon follow.  i currently have about twenty in a pond 14ft  x 9ft, 4ft deep and they are some of the healthiest i have seen and some of them have grown to 3ft long and weigh about 8 kilos.
