  1. You are not clear with what you want.  Will you be upgrading on a PC or a Mac?  Frankly, I have no idea how parallels will help you make a determination how of if you can upgrade.

With a Mac, Vista really works very well and better than it does on virtually all PCs.  The same is true with XP.

However if you have a PC with XP on it now, you did not indicate the hardware specs of your computer.  That said, it gives no baseline to judge the specific steps to help you.

An important factor also depends on what version of Vista you will be upgrading to. Some versions are better than others. Make sure your applications you have for XP will also work with the Vista version you have and that your applications are all Vista compatible and to have drivers for all your devices that will ensure they work with Vista.

It's clear you've made up your mind. If you have a computer that is over 1-2 years old, there is a possibility you may not have enough processor power, RAM or Cashe.

The only difference between the two OS in terms of functionality is Vista will run Direct 10 X and XP cannot.

Before installing any OS, make sure you back up everything you have in case you may need it for the future.

With that as a back drop, the following link is provided to you to verify if your computer meets the minimum hardware requires Microsoft say is necessary to run Vista:

The only difference with these instructions is to ensure all the service packs were loaded.

  2. Sometimes upgrades do not go as planned.  Therefore I recommend you backup ALL of your data to CD, DVD, a second hard drive, tape or whatever.  Just make sure you have saved everything you consider to be important or is difficult to replace to another media so you can easily restore it after the upgrade.

  3. Down load upgrade adviser from Microsoft site. It will tell you if your computer can run Vista and if not what you need to do
