WHAT WERE THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE VARIOUS STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE EQUAL RIGHTS?

I'm assuming you're writing about the US Civil Rights Movement?   There have been many books written about the subject, & there's far too much to be said  in so short a space.  

There was also a Civil Rights Movement in South Africa against aparthide that occurred about 20 years later. This one involved Stehpen Biko, Nelson Mandella & many more.  

The reason for my my confusion is you used the verb "were", meaning one than one.  If you meant only one movement, you should use "was".
