  1. Earth worms and early in the morning or when its raining

  2. You have only to procure tackle strong enough to draw them out of the water, using a hook according to the expected size of your game. A single or double gut leader is necessary, according to the strength required. Minnows, pieces of fish, shad roe, worms, toasted cheese, insects, pieces of meat or liver, chickens offal - any of these baits will attract the catfish. You can fish with hand lines, or with a rod, as you may prefer. The proper hook is the Limerick salmon from No. 1 to 5, according to the size of your fish. They do not bite very vigorously, but performs a series of fine nibbles, similar to the bite of an eel. The catfish is an excellent pan fish when properly cooked. In St. Louis the large ones are sold in market like our large seafish, being cut up in steaks of the size desired by the purchaser. They are plentiful always in mud bottoms, above mill dams, and in coves of the river. The large ones are often taken by trolling with artificial squid or fly. The time for fishing catfish begins in April, and lasts until cold weather.

  3. use shinners if u want 10 pounders about 3to4 inchs of bottom and hold on about 10 threw 1200 pm when they hit  losen your drag or u will lose your rod to big daddy.

  4. I like frozen mackeral it works great if you can find it... next would be dead shrimp - spoiled so it stinks...

There are various stink baits (Wal-Mart - bait shops) or yes chicken liver but it comes off so easy unless you get a pair of pantyhose and cut them up then put the chicken liver in them and have a tie from a bread back to keep it closed....

night crawlers work well...as does a dead cut up fish you caught at the lake....crayfish dead or alive work too...

At night or early in the morning is best - check the lunar calendar..

Just as mentioned - be sure you have the tackle to get them out of the water - catfish are very strong and watch their spiny fins (1 on each side and at top of their back)

you can catch them in deep water anytime - they like to keep out of the light - anything that smells that will stay on the hook will work good - remember they are drawn by smell.

In the Saint Johns river my grandfather used to put trot lines out and he used cut up bars of soap for bait!!

Good luck - remember heavy line & hook to hold on to them if you get a big one..

  5. catfish are those spur of the moment fish . it mostly depends on how you present your bait. the whiskers that see are not the only sensors they have they have thousands thru out there body. they can detect movement in the water or by smell. for that reason i try to use different types of baits because they have different tastes every day like humans.i like to use live bluegills(brim), shad, chubs, and goldfish, but don't throw your bait away when it dies, cut your bait in half at an angle behind the eyes because catfish go after the eyes. i hope this helps!!!!! good luck and good fishing

  6. any type of liver works great (chicken liver) and best times are usually in the evening and night

  7. I have always caught catfish on chicken livers with a size 2/0 to 4/0 baitholder hook and 1 ounce sinker to get it to the bottom.  However Flatheads prefer live bait more so minnows also are good.

  8. Using other fish like hand size panfish. Cut them in thirds or halfs depending on the size cats your looking for.  Use good size treble hook and if you want put on a stinger hook.  Typically the head of the panfish worked the best and caught the biggest cats I've ever caught.  36" cat weighing 30 LBS.  But I've also lost way bigger cats.

  9. i think shrimp

  10. Jumbo Shrimp.. Cut into pieces about 1 inch cubes for the small to median cats or a whole one on a large hook for for those monster cannal cats. Plus if the cats not eating your shrimp, you can.. Grill shrimp roasting by the fire.. What more can you ask...

Just some of my experiences fishing the Connecticut River...

  11. early in the morning or early at night fish don't like to be late they stay under water in the sunlight because it's too hot for them to swim around.

  12. WORM

  13. Live Shrimp or dead shrimp or cut bait at about 8 is when they start biteing

  14. For the bait, what with ya' hittin' the waters ta'nite, make it easy on yourself and pick up some Chicken Liver at your local grocery store or bait shop. Unwrapped, let the air cure it up to the point where one can pick up it's smell at 10 feet + ! Catfish are bottom feeders and they luv stuff that smells ta' "hi heaven". Your fishin' at night ~ personally I believe it be the best time for em'. Good luck and hope ya' do a lot of them ;)...
