My brother was outside w/ his friends and they said they saw this moth like ball.. that had legs.

Soo they looked closer and closer at it... and it exploded.

Then out of it.. came lots of tiny spiders!

Then.. they said the baby spiders, when all over the mom spider (dead now) and were eating her.

Once done.. they all left.

Its was near my house.. and I told my brother to get the bug spray.. and spray all of the sidewalk.. where they were on.. and the grass that they entered to!

Anywhoo.. I kinda didn't belive him.. but I told him to spray the bug spray anyways cuz I'm deadly scared of spiders.

Sooo.. does the mother spider really explode and the babies eat their mother???

Thxxs in Advance.

TOTALLY GROSSED OUTT!

  1. I don't think so, I know that females eat the male after breeding, but I don't think the mother explodes. Most spiders don't but I don't know what species this was. They probably did eat the mum but I don't think the mother exploded, the egg sack might have but not the mum.

  2. Baby spiders come out of an egg sack, so I don't think the mother would explode. I'm not an expert, but I think your brother might have been over exaggerating a bit. Nothing that I would be concerned about.

  3. yes that's where they get there first nutrients

  4. no the mother spider does not explode, what your brother saw was a female spider who was carrying her egg sack on her back (some spiders do this) he actually saw the egg sack break open not the spider, the babies do not eat the mother they crawl over her and when they are a bit bigger they the mother spins a web for them and then leaves, they will leave after a few days

  5. Female spiders do not explode and die when giving birth. This is just another myth. They create an egg sack and lay eggs in them. The babies hatch and go on their way, leaving mom alone to repeat the whole process again.

  6. What "exploded" was most likely the egg sac. If they saw spiderlings on the mother's body, it may actually have been the mother's molted skin rather than the mother. Spiders are cannibalistic and some species do readily prey on the mother (and each other) shortly after they hatch out, but I think that applies more to tropical species of spiders rather than what we have here in the US.

  7. for lots of species it is sadly true! i know its disgusting, butt(hehe) yeah it is. Don't know much about spiders, but they are cannibalistic! Depends on the species though!

EDIT: yeah they probably dont explode, just the egg sack explodes!
