  1. Tap water is okay for fish but you need to buy some kind of tap water treatment. Also you cannot just put the fish inside after you filled the tank with water. You need to set up the tank with a filter and everything .then you need to wait maybe a week for good bacteria to develope. The good bacteria eat all amonia that the fish excrete through their p**p. If you dont wait and put the fish in after the water they make too much amonia and thats poison for them so they die. So you need the bacteria to eat the amonia. Also if you dont want to wait a week you can buy a bacteria supplement at a petstore and you would only have to wait for about three days.

  2. if the water was to cold they could haved died from shock . If they put them in a bag place it in the tank and slowly let them get use to the temp of the water.

  3. If they are dieing that quickly then it is likely that Chlorine residue in your tap water is killing them.

Get some water treatment like Prime, which will neutralise any chlorine or chloramine in your water.

Add that to the tank before you add fish, and at each water change.

    Good Luck

  4. I use tap water in my tank and I use a water conditioner.  Is your tank new?  Your ammonia and other levels may be off.  I had eight platies last week and my levels became high and I lost five of my fish.  It could have been the temperature of the tank.  Did you leave them in the bag for about 15 minutes so they could get used to the water temperature?

  5. Water from the sink faucet is fine but you have to treat it to remove heavy metals and chlorine and let the water sit with the filter on for several days to cycle. It is best to start with some inexpensive fish to help the water cycle quicker but be prepared for one or two to die during the cycling process if you choose to do it that way. You can find many sources of info on the web. Try  http://www.aquariumpros.com

  6. That is most definately true tap water is harmful without water conditioners. Also temperature is crucial. & when you do get new fish float the bag with fish in it, in water for 10-20 minutes before releasing them into the tank. Also you shoud test your water for all the proper elements. A lot of pet stores will test it for you for free if you bring them a sample. Good luck with your new fishys.

  7. Tap water isn't always the best. They have chlorine and chemicals in them and they can poison fish. At a pet store or anywhere where they sell fish supplies you can get water conditioner. It gets all rid of those bad things in the water. And i keep a few of those empty milk jugs and fill them up with water, it's better because sometimes theres a huge amount of temperature change in the water and some fish can't handle that big change and can shock and kill them. So get maybe couple of those depending on how big your tank is, and fill those up and let them sit in your room or where ever you keep your fish and fill the tank up with that water so they won't get shocked and die.

    Hope this help you! =]

  8. Sink water has chlorine and deadly heavy metals, also it might be too cold for your fishes. I tried AquaSafe water conditioner, they killed my fishes too.

Next time when you buy fish, keep tap water in your room for more than 6 hours, first to adjust room temperature, second to release chlorine. Best to add some "Stress Coat" and Stress Zyme" into the water to kill harmful bacteria, eliminate chlorine, cure disease, and heal your injured fishes faster.

Before i had stress coat, i used the same method as "dude" did. keep the tap water in your bedroom for at least 6 hours to release all chlorines and warm up the water, then add the fish into the water.

  9. TAP WATER IS ----NOT---- SAFE FOR FISH. It has chlorine in it which kills fish. Go to Wal-mart and buy water conditioner.

See this is what the bottle looks like:

go to Wal-Mart and buy some of that. Read the directions and put in as much as you need for your tank size.

  10. I USE TAP WATER ALL THE TIME!! HAHA!! UMM BUT BEFORE PUTTING IN YOUR FISH.. LEAVE THE WATER STILL FOR ABOUT 45 MIN. TO 60 MIN. I NEVER USED WATER CONDITIONER. IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY! I'VE BEEN OWNING FISH FOR A LONG TIME. JUST LET THE WATER KEEP STILL FOR A WHILE THEN IT'S DISTILLED WATERR
