Lightening occur due to accumulation of charge or electrons in the air. As a storm grows, electrical charges build up in the clouds. At the same time, oppositely charged particles are growing in numbers on earth's surface. Opposite charges attract and due to large numbers of charges this attraction grows quickly, at some point this attraction becomes an electrical flow, a flow of electrons between the ground and the clouds. These particles move at incredible speeds and when they meet they complete an electrical circuit from the ground which surges upward at nearly one third the speed of light and then a bright flash of lightening.
