  1. The bar strengthens the bike by making the frame triangular. Women's bikes traditionally had the bar lower because they would ride with skirts or dresses. If you go to a bike shop today and look at the women's bikes, you'll see that the cruiser bikes still have the lower bar, but that women's road bikes have the same high bar that mens bikes do.

  2. Ah, the girls/boys bike question for the 15th time this month. A standard men's frame is the strongest.

  3. It goes back to Roman times. The emperor decreed that 10 speeds will have top tubes parallel on men's bikes. This is so they could fill the bike frame with water and put a little window in it for making it a level. Since most men rode their bikes to the job site (construction was big back then) they always had a level with them.

The Egyptians created the women's frame, again as a level. But the Egyptians used the woman's top tube at a 45 degree angle to keep the pyramids lined up.

Oh, and the women would sit on those bikes and keep telling the men slaves to move the 20 ton blocks: "a little to the left, a little more, no that's too far... now a little to the right..."

This is why the Exodus occurred.

  4. It goes back to the time when women wore long dresses to cycle in.  A lower top tube meant they could get on the bike without showing their knickers.
