Question:

WHY DOES MY DOG KEEP PUKING?

My 2 1/2 year old chihuahua seems to be puking almost daily now, it just looks like her own food coming up. But I don't think it is the food that's the problem because she has been eating it for her whole life and my other chihuahua isn't sick from it. Other than the puking she seems healthy running around playing and seems alert. She had puppies 6 weeks ago and they are weaned off of her only drinking a tiny bit off of her. Does anyone think she may have picked up something from them ie. a parasite? All the pups are completely healthy and I don't see any visible parasites in their stool. I will be taking them to the vet in 2 weeks for their shots and check-ups. Should I also take my female or am I worrying too much? I have a habit of running to the vet at any sign of illness and most of the time it's just a waste of my money because they can't do anything for it and it's usually not serious.

I just wanted some opinions before going that route. If there is anything I can try first to settle her stomach I would prefer to do so.

  1. I would put her on a bland diet of chicken and rice. You can give dogs pepdo for there stomach. Make sure she's not running a temp. I would not have her feed the puppy's when on the pepdo bismol. If she is acting fine and not running a temp there really is nothing that can be done but be on a bland diet. Just make sure she is drinking. My tito always has problems with that and that's all the vet does. If he runs a temp sometimes antibiotic are used. But most of the time you can treat at home.

  2. First of all, I am not a vet, but an experienced Yorkshire Terrier breeder, and I can tell you that I ALWAYS worm my babies and mom several times. I start when they are 2 weeks old, then do 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, etc. until they go to their new homes. Wormer does not hurt the pups given in the appropriate doses, and a good vet will tell you that all animals are born with some sort of parasite, even if it is dormant in the mom, it can come out in the babies very easily. As for your mom, I wouldn't worry if she is still eating and playing like normal, but definitely get them into that vet to have them wormed if you can't do it yourself ASAP. That can most certainly cause the vomiting. In the meantime, you can settle her tummy with a little bit of liquid peptobismol.

  3. A phone call to your veterinarian shouldn't cost you anything.  Your regular veterinarian knows your dog and can provide better advice than a bunch of strangers on a website who have never seen your dog.

  4. As long as the dog is still drinking plenty of water and has an appetite, I would not run to the vet.  First thing you want to do is take away all food and water until the vomitting has stopped.  Then give the dog some water.  Wait a couple hours and if the dog does not vomit anymore, give her some more water.  You can slowly increase to chicken broth and add rice the next time.  Only offer small amounts of this frequently throughout the day.  You don't want to shock the dogs stomach.  If the vomitting does not stop after trying this for a day or so... you will want to visit the vet.  Your main concern is dehydration.  Most adult dogs could go 12-24 hours without food under these conditions... but since she has been giving a lot of her nutrients to her pups, she will need to have some replaced more than other adult dogs.  I also suggest not letting the puppies drink from her at all, this will cause he to become dehydrated even faster.  Good luck!

  5. it might not be uest to his or her food and it does not get along with him ask your vet what food he should be on and only 2 treats a day MAX

    Jules hope i help

  6. She should not be throwing up that often! I would definitely take her to the vet, along with the puppies, but would not wait for two weeks. Throwing up, will cause her to become dehydrated, and that is very dangerous. Make sure that she is drinking water! There has to be an underlying problem, causing her to vomit that often, and honestly only a vet can tell you what the reason is and treat it properly and effectively.  You are doing the right thing, by taking your animals to the vet, and spending the money, to find out if they were sick, when you suspect something is wrong. That's what a responsible dog owner does! There is nothing wrong with being cautious. Just think of it this way, if you don't take her in, and you find out later on, that she really has a medical problem, that could have been easily treated, and you let it go, you will never be able to forgive yourself, for not providing her help, when she really needed it. The way I look at it, is it's always much better to be safe, than to be sorry! As far as giving her something to settle her stomach, again the vet would be the person, to call and ask!
