Because of a little thing called the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. A criminal defendant has the absolute right to not be forced to incriminate his/herself.

It would be considered a form of torture and it is against the law in the USA, unfortunately. I agree though, SOMETHING is VERY strange with Casey Anthony (Caylee's Mother). If she really loved and cared for her child, she would be doing EVERYTHING to find her. I tend to think Caylee is no longer with us, and I think Casey (the Mother of Caylee) has some severe problems.
